Godzilla: Minus One missed us. We never got a theatrical release. But the film is already available on streaming (HBO Max). I have spent years rebuking filmmakers for saturating Godzilla movies with human characters.
But then Godzilla: Minus One comes along and succeeds despite doing everything I hate. Unlike the Hollywood versions of the franchise, the Godzilla we meet in this one is a villain, a walking hurricane that destroys everything in sight.
The protagonist is a kamikaze pilot trying to find a new purpose in life after surviving the Second World War. To many critics, Minus One is the best Godzilla film ever made. The Three Musketeers: Part 1 -D’Artagnan falls in a similar boat. This could be the best ‘Three Musketeers’ adaptation in existence, boasting exquisite fight scenes, gorgeous cinematography, and a talented cast. Rotten Tomatoes critics gave it a 98 per cent rating.
I think we have mentioned The Holdovers before. Paul Giamatti plays a professor at an all-boys school, forced to watch over students who have nowhere to go for the holidays. Viewers have already added the film to the ranks of great Christmas classics because of the heartwarming themes. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is not a children’s movie. Yes, your children will love it, but so will you.
Your opinion of the franchise does not matter. Whether you loved or hated previous Ninja Turtles projects, you are bound to have a great time with Mutant Mayhem. Why? Because of the charismatic characters, surprisingly humourous dialogue and heartwarming themes. The soundtrack is fantastic, and I say that as someone that does not like hip- hop.
I don’t need to sell you on The Boy and the Heron. We are talking about a Studio Ghibli film directed by Hayao Miyazaki, animation’s greatest director. Are you surprised that critics are calling it a masterpiece?
The Spider-Verse movies don’t do anything for me. Do I hate them? No. However, in my opinion, they are nowhere near as good as so many people claim. Across the Spider-Verse is no different. I thought it was okay.
That said, critics and casual viewers have called it the best comic book film ever made. That alone should encourage you to check it out, if only to see if the hype is justified. I will say this: the visuals are incredible. They Cloned Tyrone deserves the hype. John Boyega plays a street thug who learns he might be a clone.
I urge anyone calling The Creator the best sci-fi film of 2023 to watch They Cloned Tyrone. I cannot believe John Wick: Chapter 4 came out this year. It feels like a lifetime ago. Unlike Spider-Verse, I agree with reviewers calling Chapter 4 the best action flick of the last ten years. It exceeds every expectation.
The same goes for Talk to Me. While I saw scarier horror movies in 2023, none was as impeccably plotted or gripping as Talk to Me. You have a group of teenagers using a mysterious hand to deliberately summon the undead. What begins as a fun game takes a nasty turn when one of them opens a door to the other side and forgets to close it.
Hopefully, one or more of these movies will put a smile on your face.
