It has been four years since Eagles Production broke up into two bands.

Eagles Production was founded 20 years ago by Fred Maiso (RIP), Mesach Semakula, Ronald Mayinja, Grace Sekamatte, Geoffrey Lutaaya, Irene Namatovu and Fred Sseruga, but after a hugely successful 16-year run, they broke up acrimoniously.

The group cuts cake

Semakula, Mayinja, Catherine Kusasira, Stecia Mayanja, Sekamatte, Sseruga, Maureen Nantume and others decided to form Golden band while Geoffrey Lutaaya and wife Irene Namatovu formed Da New Eagles.

Last Friday, Golden band celebrated their fourth anniversary at New Club Obbligato on Bombo road, kicking off at 8:30pm. Stecia Mayanja, dressed in maroon, stormed the stage with her Equalizer and continued with six love songs, as did Maureen Nantume and Catherine Kusasira.

At 11pm, Semakula took revellers, including MPs Bobi Wine and Allan Ssewanyana, through his songs including Nze Ani, Nkoye, Abawagizi and Si Ggwe Ansimira.

Semakula attributed their milestone to teamwork, saying: “Thank you for coming although the weather is not good.”

Mayinja performed last after midnight with Government before they cut the cake, but it was not lost on critics and fans that Obbligato was proving to be too big for the band; each artiste seemed to have drawn about 20 revellers on average.

One reveller joked that maybe the band should have invited the flashy witchdoctor, Mama Fiina.
