Even a seemingly straightforward meal of shrimp and chips also comes with some butter sauce on the side. The Irish potatoes (way smaller in size than our usual) and the sweet potatoes (way more fluffy than ours) are also cooked with some bit of butter.
And the reason? I was told it is fashionable to be fat in South Africa and eating butter in most foods will help you achieve that. As a matter of fact, finding a skinny South African is extremely rare, even amongst the university communities. Butter is so much in demand that in April this year there was a nationwide shortage and the country was forced to import from Europe to satisfy the growing local demand.
The high demand has also encouraged counterfeits to flood the market. So, just for your information, not everyone in the world is obsessing about their dairy products’ intake.
