Retired model Judith Heard was a topic on social media criticism over the weekend.

She wore what looked like a wedding gown to her friend SK Mbuga’s wedding. Her gown had a touch of silver, lace and handmade detail to finishing that went all the way to the train. It was beautiful.

She wore a silver necklace with diamonds. All that was missing was the tiara and a groom. When she posted the photos on social media, some people were not happy. In fact, some suggested she should have been thrown out of the venue.

One of the most important rules when it comes to dressing up for a wedding is not to wear white. Apparently white is seen as an attempt to steal the bride’s shine.

The only person who should be shining on that day is the bride. Personally, I hate red because it is one colour that stands out in a crowd. No wonder ex-girlfriends wear it to weddings for that all-eyes-on-me moment.

Men mostly have no issues. There can be a couple of them outside the groom’s team wearing similar tuxedos to the main man’s and they even take photos with him. Not so with women. You just don’t steal the bride’s thunder.

What Mrs Heard did was totally out of order. It was worse than wearing a white dress. One moment people were discussing the bride’s gown and how it was age-appropriate and the designer who put it together respecting they were Muslim, then all of a sudden the attention was on one of the guests’ attire.

It is a question of respecting yourself and the person who invited you to their big day. Have that at the back of your mind when you next get an invite to a wedding.
