Created by Markus ‘Notch’ Persson’ (using Java) and initially released in 2009, Minecraft is the best-selling video game of all time, boasting 170 million monthly players.

The live-action adaptation (A Minecraft Movie) was directed by Jared and Jerusha Hess, a husband-and-wife duo best known for Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre.

It follows four misfits who are sucked into a cubic wonderland where they must embark on a magical adventure to master their new world, defend it against nefarious enemies and secure a path home.

Currently, the adaptation has a 48 per cent critic score and an 87 per cent audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics have called it a ‘hyperactive mess,’ ‘Obnoxious,’ and ‘Inconsistent.’ In other words, the film is more likely to entertain young children. You can watch A Minecraft Movie in cinemas today.
