Wisdom primary school emerged the winners of the recently-concluded Road Safety Quiz and Zizi the Zebra competition, held at Uganda Manufacturers’ Association (UMA) Conference hall in Nakawa.
Organised by Vivo Energy Uganda, the competition attracted 20 primary schools, dueling on road safety in a bid to motivate and reward champions and enhance their road safety knowledge.
This was the conclusion of a road safety campaign targeted at 52 schools. Children were involved in several activities to equip them with skills to master good road safety behaviour that they can pass on to their friends and family, to curb the road carnage.
Wisdom PS emerged the winner with 1,655 points, stemming stiff competition from 19 other schools, including Kampala Junior School and Train Up A Child, the first and second runners-up, respectively.

In his remarks, Vivo Energy managing director, Hans Paulsen, said children are the best ambassadors for the cause.
“As future drivers, we believe this is the best age to inculcate a good road safety culture. We chose children as one of our key avenues to contribute to a better road safety culture in Uganda,” Paulsen said. “Children also play a critical role in influencing their parents and are, therefore, our best ambassadors.”
Cerinah Tugume, the corporate communications manager for Vivo Energy Uganda, added: “Uganda loses over 3,000 people annually to road accidents, and 20 per cent are children. This is why we have invested efforts in improving our road safety culture through education.”
The pupils competed in the quiz with questions all about road safety knowledge, rules and signs. There was also a session for playing the interactive road safety mobile application called Zizi the Zebra.
The app was launched last year to enable children learn about road safety in a fun and interactive manner. The app has been promoted among primary schools and over 1,500 children have been actively playing the game this year.
