On Saturday, August 5, Our Lady Queen of Africa SS Rubaga alias Rubaga Girls SS, marked 50 years of existence.
Popularly known as Rubaga Girls, the school was started in 1967 by the Catholic Church, which prompted colourful celebrations at its premises on Lubaga hill.
The archbishop of Kampala, Dr Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, presided over the ceremonies, with vice president Edward Ssekandi as chief guest. Several alumnae, parents and teachers were on hand to add colour to the celebrations.

The girls-only school will this year cater for candidates with physical disabilities. According to the head teacher, Sr Clare of Assisi Nakubulwa, the first cohort of these students will sit for their S4 exams this year.
Started by the White Sisters, the school started with a population of 30 girls and has grown to an enrolment of 1,206 girls, with the church maintaining that the students are endowed with a zeal for prayer and good behaviour.
The school recently won nine of the 13 trophies in Church music competitions at the Kampala archdiocese, and are the reigning champions in East Africa Badminton competition, having first taken this title five years ago.
It was also the recent host of various entertainment events such as Miss Teen and Buzz Teeniez awards, as well as swimming competition.
Vice President Ssekandi commended the school authorities for emphasizing the education of the girl child.
“I appreciate the presence and efforts of people who have made this school to stand the test of time,” said Ssekandi.
He planted a tree as a mark of observing environmental conservation and a commemoration of the golden jubilee. On his part, the archbishop thanked the White Sisters for emulating the example of Jesus Christ where he commanded the disciples to go and teach.
He asked the school fraternity to remember, rejoice and renew in line with the theme of the celebrations.
A well-structured multi-purpose hall will be built in honour of 50 years of quality service at the school. The Turkish embassy, in partnership with the school, will also construct a swimming pool for the girls.
