The school, set to open its doors for the 2025 academic year, is expected to transform education in the region. According to Kotido district engineer Paul Bertrand Logole, the project is 80 per cent complete, with commissioning anticipated in January 2025, just in time for the new school term beginning February 6.
The construction, which started in October 2022, was initially slated to be completed within 18 months. The Shs 2.8 billion project comprises 14 key structures, including classrooms, an administration block, latrines, staff quarters, and specialized science and ICT laboratories.
While the original deadline was October 2023, delays in government funding caused periodic construction halts, prompting the district to extend the completion timeline by three months. Logole reassured residents that work has resumed, with interior painting underway, and expressed optimism that the school will be ready for use by the start of the term.
The government has already advertised vacancies for the headteacher and deputy headteacher positions, a move welcomed by the local community. Peter Ogol, a resident, noted that the school would attract students from neighbouring sub-counties, Kotido Municipality, and even Kaabong district. He emphasized that this influx of students could spur economic growth by creating business opportunities.
Additionally, Ogol highlighted that the school’s proximity would reduce the financial burden on families, as students previously had no choice but to enrol in distant boarding schools. Another resident, Kojo Apakwayo, expressed excitement over the employment prospects the school’s operation would bring to the area.
As the finishing touches are applied to the buildings, Rengen Seed Secondary School stands as a beacon of hope for Kotido, promising to uplift education standards and stimulate the local economy.
