Prof Kawooya is professor emeritus in the department of Radiology at the School of Medicine, Makerere University, and College of Health Sciences and also the director of Ernest Cook Ultrasound Research Institute (ECUREI), an ultrasound-training institute. He also paid a special tribute to those around him in his quest to improve healthcare worldwide.
“I acknowledge the teamwork of my fellow faculty and staff at ECUREIin Kampala and Makerere University department of radiology where I’m professor emeritus,” he said.
“I was inspired to co-found several Ugandan and African medical societies and to educate and train several professionals in Africa and all over the world.”
Prof Kawooya’s area of research is ultrasound and he has tackled every aspect of its practice. He has published over 55 articles in peer-reviewed journals, as well as five chapters in books on different topics, including imaging of tropical diseases.
Prof Kawooya has served in key roles for prestigious societies, notably as secretary general of the African Society of Radiology (ASR) from 2008 to 2017. He is a founding member and past president of the Uganda Society for the Advancement of Radiology and Imaging (USOFARI).
Prof. Kawooya initiated the creation of the Pan African Congress of Radiology and Imaging (PACORI), over which he presided in 2005 to 2007.
