President Yoweri Museveni has appointed Dr Michael Atingi-Ego as the new governor of the Bank of Uganda (BoU), filling a position that had remained vacant since the passing of Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile in January 2021.
Atingi-Ego, who previously served as deputy governor, now officially takes over the role, ending years of speculation about why the president had neither appointed a substantive governor nor designated an acting one.
Additionally, Dr Augustus Nuwagaba, an economist and expert in economic transformation, has been appointed deputy governor, according to Sandor Walusimbi, senior presidential press secretary.
Dr Atingi-Ego is a seasoned economist with vast experience in monetary policy and financial management. Before his tenure as deputy governor, he served as executive director of the Macroeconomics and Financial Management Institute of Eastern and Southern Africa (MEFMI) in Harare, Zimbabwe.
Dr Nuwagaba is an international consultant on economic transformation and a wealth creation expert in Africa. His background includes an MBA specializing in central bank monetary policy and its impact on commercial bank competitiveness.
The appointments are expected to bring stability and strategic leadership to Uganda’s central banking system, ensuring continued economic oversight and financial policy implementation.
In other words, after the successful US$.60 million heist from the Central Bank, through a dubious syndicate committed by Ministry of Finance Officials IT Wizards and Witches.
Otherwise, why wait for 3 years to appoint a substantive Governor of Central Bank.
