Lira Golf Course was abuzz with excitement last weekend as over 100 golfers from across the country gathered for the 4th edition of the Lira Ladies Golf Open, a tournament dedicated to promoting women’s participation in golf, especially in northern Uganda.
Sponsored by Equity bank under the theme “Backing Every Bold Swing,” the two-day event attracted both professional and amateur players and served as more than just a competition, it was a celebration of women’s rising influence in the sport.
Professional golfers teed off on Friday, with amateur players following on Saturday. Beyond the fairways and greens, the tournament also served as a platform for networking, mentorship, and empowering women to take up golf both competitively and recreationally.
In a statement, Equity, noted that as a bank it is proud to be part of this initiative because they understand that supporting sports, especially women in sports is part of building a stronger, more inclusive society – noting that the bank’s relationship with the sport dates back to 2008 and aligns with their broader goal of driving social impact through sports partnerships.
The tournament ended on a high as Meron Kyomugisha from Kabale Golf Club emerged as the overall winner.
She was closely followed by Martha Babirye and Peace Kabasweka, who tied for second place, underscoring the growing competitiveness and talent among Uganda’s female golfers.
Organizers and players alike hailed the event as a major success and a clear sign that women’s golf is gaining traction across Uganda, thanks to consistent support from sponsors like Equity Bank.
