Gulf Air, the Kingdom of Bahrain’s national carrier, is set to resume its flights to Entebbe, officials have said.

The kingdom’s foreign affairs minister, Sheikh Khaled Bin Ahmad Al-Khalifa, announced this during a November 22 meeting with Uganda’s ambassador to Gulf States Dr Rashid Yahya Ssemuddu in Manama, the Bahraini capital.

The airline suspended flights to Uganda in 2012 – three months after its launch – on low business. It was doing four flights a week to Entebbe.

Around the same time, the airliner also suspended its routes to Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Milan (Italy), Athens (Greece) and Damascus (Syria). The airliner’s possible return to Entebbe is part of Bahrain’s new interest for investment in Uganda.

A statement issued on Wednesday by Uganda’s embassy to the Gulf states based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, said that given Bahrain’s growing interest in Uganda, a high-level business delegation will visit the country in March next year, during which several investment agreements and deals are expected to be sealed.

The Gulf States’ interests in Uganda are in the banking sector, especially fol- lowing the legalisation of Islamic banking system in the country.
