Brac donates to Kawempe hospital

In celebration of their 53rd anniversary, BRAC Uganda has donated essential medical supplies worth Shs 20 million to Kawempe national referral hospital to improve maternal and child healthcare.

Among the items donated were mama kits, pads, soap, and movable Sato Pan toilets to enhance hygiene and care for mothers post-delivery, thereby reducing the risks of infections and complications and ultimately supporting the well-being of mothers and their newborns.

Juliet Mataka, the head of the health department at BRAC (the NGO arm), stated that the donation was part of BRAC’s broader commitment to enhancing maternal and child healthcare in Uganda, especially in marginalised communities.

She emphasised that BRAC works with community health workers to improve sanitation and address the health needs of families, particularly those of children under five and pregnant mothers.

“Many maternal deaths are caused by preventable issues such as bleeding and infections. As BRAC, we ensure that mothers receive timely services at health facilities. This year, as we celebrate 53 years of BRAC serving communities, we chose Kawempe national referral Hospital to identify with the mothers who have delivered and provide them with this support,” Mataka said.

Dr Lawrence Kazibwe, the clinical head at Kawempe national referral hospital, expressed his gratitude and appreciation for BRAC’s contributions towards improving maternal and child healthcare.

“BRAC has always played a vital role in enhancing health and household hygiene within communities, especially in the villages, and we really appreciate you for that,” Dr Kazibwe said.
