Regardless of the standings at the end of the season, Villa has played its part in renewing vibrancy and interest in the sport. This, however, has come at a huge cost for Villa and the other 15 UPL clubs because they are on their own like orphaned children. Fufa, which has the mandate to promote the league, has long abandoned the cause.
In fact, it is sheer perseverance for many UPL clubs to keep afloat in an era when Fufa has completely absolved itself of responsibility towards the clubs.
When it became apparent that the standards were falling, Fufa waived its levy on collections from league matches as a measure of ‘showing concern’ but the real motivation was to leave the crumbs to the clubs.
Instead, went for the sponsorship money and broadcasting rights, an area it continues to reap big at the expense of the clubs. That’s why I find it insulting for disgraced Fufa boss Moses Magogo to continue to blame clubs for not doing enough to mobilize fans.
It is also ironical that the same Fufa hitting out at clubs continues to hijack potential sponsors for UPL clubs with its meaningless tournaments such as The Drum and Cranes Namutima.
It is like a father competing with sons for attention and in the process, Fufa has lowered its bargaining power to the extent of signing $30,000 seasonal deals. This is way below the expectations of a national football association. Whatever the case, all I can say is kudos to the UPL clubs for their perseverance.
Villa dream still on in spite setbacks
Meanwhile, two losses in a row have dented the Villa charge towards a first league title since 2004 but I can assure all and sundry that we remain firm and on course.
Villa has built a young squad capable of dominating the league in the years to come and I have no doubt they remain focused to see the club to the line. I am glad KCCA has also woken up to keep the challenge whereas Vipers continue to blow hot and cold.
Ladies and gentlemen, brace yourselves for a thrilling climax.
