At least three people were killed and nine others injured in a tragic road accident that occurred on Tuesday night along the Kampala-Jinja highway at Wantoni, Mukono Municipality.

The crash, which happened at around 9:00 pm, involved multiple vehicles, including a Fuso truck (registration number UBB 422U), three Toyota Hiace taxis (UBP 359W, UAW 042E, UAQ 398L), and several motorcycles, some identified by registration numbers UFL 976T, UFN 916P, UEU 698W, UDK 495B, and UDZ 777A.

According to preliminary findings, the accident was likely caused by brake failure. Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson Patrick Onyango said the Fuso truck driver reportedly lost control, veered into the opposite lane, and ploughed into parked taxis and motorcycles at a busy taxi stage.

“Three people died on the spot,” Onyango confirmed, adding that nine others sustained injuries and are being treated at various health facilities.

The injured victims include Paul Ssaku, Bakiti Zafafu, Bashi Sazza, Gerald Lubega, Jackson Kakumirizi, Aisha Nasaza, Irene Nafuna, Denis Lubega, and Juliet Bisirikira, among others.

The Fuso driver fled the scene and is currently on the run. Police say a manhunt has been launched and investigations are ongoing to bring the suspect to justice. The bodies of the deceased were taken to Kawolo hospital for postmortem examination, while the injured continue to receive medical attention.
