Former minister Lokodo dies in Switzerland

RIP: Fr Simon Lokodo

RIP: Fr Simon Lokodo

Former minister of Ethics and Integrity Fr. Simon Lokodo, 64, has died. Lokodo reportedly collapsed during a meeting in Geneva, Switzerland on Thursday and was rushed to the intensive care unit, where he passed on this morning.

He'd travelled to Geneva to represent the chairman of the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) during the Universal Periodic Review working group which is reviewing Uganda's human rights record.

At the time of his death, Lokodo was a commissioner at UHRC, where he was deployed by President Yoweri Museveni after he was dropped from cabinet.

Crispin Kaheru, a member of the commission told URN that Lokodo left the country on Tuesday and at the time, did not have any health complications. However, the team in Geneva reported that he started feeling unwell during the session.

“We are told that during the session, he did not feel well. He was taken to a hospital in Geneva. The hospital proposed that he should be retained for further tests. Upon the results coming back, they said he should be held. He has been in the hospital for about two days,” Kaheru said.

Lokodo served for nearly 10-years as minister for Ethics. He previously served as state minister for Industry from 2009 to 2011 when he was appointed minister for Ethics, a position he held for nearly 10 years. He also represented Dodoth County in parliament and he was ex-communicated from priesthood by Pope Benedict after he joined elective politics.

He held a degree in Theology from Pontifical Urbaniana University and a master’s degree in Theology obtained from the University of Rome. Other qualifications included a diploma in Rural Sociology, a diploma in Social Communication, diploma in Philosophy and Social Science. He was instrumental in the enactment of the Anti-pornography Act.

RIP. So who will move a motion for him to inherit a residence. Poor Fr. Lokodo does not belong to the inner circles. Though He also served diligently, I doubt if his widow will get anything from this gov't.

He might have succumbed to the still prevailing winter conditions in the temperate climate countries.

Especially with the brutal attacks of COVID19 these days, most Africans have started to come over in these climates with their joys of having removed the lockdowns and together with their many medical inefficiencies against fighting the pandemic, they have not seen it yet.

Anyway the autopsy is awaited anxiously for this religious NRM diehard. Exactly what was he going to the International Criminal Court for? To convince it over what on the disgraceful human rights in Uganda?

It's amazing how these people never take time off to devote themselves to their health. Didn't they say this man had stroke some few years back?

I thought he had retired, since there has been no talk about pornography of late. Is dying on the job a new trend or something. They are the ones who control resources in Uganda, and yet they are working until their last day.

Do they have doctors who advise them about their health? The good thing, most work in Uganda takes only about 10% of once time, especially those working in the govt, the rest of it are partying or taking about things that will never happen, like discussing middle income or making Kampala a real city. I guess it's a win win situation for them, they don't need to be worried about burial and funeral cost

In Uganda it seems even when you are senile you continue clinging to a job, and you can be wheeled on a wheelchair for interviews when you are above 75 years and you are approved for work in a job that requires a decent amount of brain power!!!

Since Mr. Lokodo was once a priest and was excommunicated by the Pope because he was no longer fit to lead a church, hope he doesn't have a wife who will come demanding for the house he was renting...!

Am still asking for help to understand whether an spiritually fallen priest can fight corruption, build ethics in a country in Africa...

It is becoming fashionable and a fad for our self-important politicians to die abroad.

In other words, it is a bonus and makes some and their relatives more celebrated VIP than they should have been.

Otherwise, Medicine is medicine. Nationalistic Obote and Amin (RIP) proved to the whole wide world that they diligently loved and served Ugandans and could therefore trust Ugandan Doctors and got treated in the Hospital (Mulago) where their hearts were.

Which is why e.g., in the First Republic (1962-1970); in his 8-year UPC administration every year Obote opened 3 brand new Hospitals (24) complete with furnished staff accommodation.

In other words, every year of Graduation from Makerere University and/or Nursing Schools/colleges; all the Medics Graduates went to happily to serve Ugandans in Brand New Hospitals.
