Bobi Wine: One shot dead, NRM branded cars blocked in Mukono

Youths in Mukono attempt to set alight Museveni's campaign posters

Youths in Mukono attempt to set alight Museveni's campaign posters

Police have killed one person and injured another in Mukono while dispersing opposition protestors in Mukono who demonstrating against the arrest of National Unity Platform presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi.

Robert, a vendor in the area died on the spot after being shot yesterday evening and his body was taken to Mukono general hospital mortuary while Justine Namambo was hit by a stray bullet at Seeta trading centre while travelling in a taxi from Kampala and is currently admitted at Mukono hospital.

Several vehicles branded with the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party colours and campaign posters found a hard time going through Mukono district on Wednesday evening. The occupants were confronted by angry NUP supporters who were protesting against Kyagulanyi's arrest on Wednesday morning.

NUP supporters took to the streets and blocked the Kampala-Jinja highway starting from the junction of Kayunga-Mukono-Jinja stretching to Wantoni and Nasuuti trading centre respectively. They barricaded the road with boulders and burning car tyres. The protesters demanded the unconditional release of Kyagulanyi from Nalufenya police station in Jinja city where he was locked up.

Our reporter observed a number of small vehicles and trucks making u-turns as others struggled to secure parking space until the situation calmed down. Most of the people who were driving vehicles branded with NRM party colours and posters of NRM candidates were seen fleeing for their dear lives. The protesters also torched government vehicles and also pulled down posters and billboards of NRM candidates and set them ablaze.

One of the billboards that were pulled down belonged to the NRM presidential candidate, Yoweri Museveni hoisted opposite Collins hotel. The army and local defence units (LDUs) joined police and managed to disperse the protesters from the highway. The running battles shifted from the main road to small trading centres such as Ntaawo, Lower Kauga, Kame valley market and Industrial zone until 10 pm.

Only opposition campaign posters were spared and left on the streets

Police ordered traders who were still operating to close their business premises and retreat to their homes. Mukono division police commander, Abubakar Musiho, said the move was intended to keep businesses secure. He also noted that some of the rioters had made it a habit to create commotion and run into shops upon seeing police.

The seemingly exhausted officer confirmed the arrest of several ring leaders of the protest. Jamiru Munaawa, a resident of Mukono district appealed to the government to consider giving an equal platform to all political candidates to avoid such scuffles.

Some of the NRM candidates like Abassi Ssozi, the Mukono Municipality parliamentary candidate, said they are depressed with the destruction of their campaign posters by the NUP supporters.

At this rate, and if we had organised leaders in this country, M7 should consider resigning and stepping down.

I wonder what goes through the mind of these goons in the security circles when they sit down to make decisions on how to handle certain matters involving the public.

No one ever thinks of the likely consequences of each decision. This is what triggered the 09-09-09 uprising when the Kabaka was stopped from going to Bugerere but is appears they did not learn anything.

Am told there we riots through out the night and through out the country. Is it Kyagulanyi's crime that he is a darling of many.

Museveni has had the view that Baganda are cowards they fear to die. Let him taste the reality,.The reality is people got fed up a long time ago.

They either come to their senses or it will become worse. especially if it becomes tribal.

But the central question is why this brutality now and not during the NRM CEC and primaries elections?

Or then there was no covid? Tibuhaburwa and his gangsters think and believe that Ugandans are stupid and timid. But they should know it is just a matter of time and God alone knows what's coming.
