About 1,526 employees across 534 organizations in Uganda participated in the survey where they were asked to comment, rate, and assess their employers’ HR practices and policies by responding to questions under 12 thematic areas which included reward and recognition, diversity and inclusion, quality and innovation, learning and development and employee wellbeing, among others.

The survey was designed to record the viewpoint of employees regarding their organisations’ HR practices. Employees were invited to comment, rate, and assess their employers’ HR practices and policies by responding to questions under the 12 thematic areas.

While making his remarks at the awards gala held at Kampala Serena hotel, Arjun Mallik, the Prudential Insurance regional CEO, noted that it is essential for the success of businesses to acknowledge categorically that employees are at the centre of what they are able to achieve and for employees to thrive, it is important to lead the conversation beyond just compensations.

“For our people to bring the best version of themselves, a holistic set of criteria need to be defined and we have done so by identifying 12 thematic areas that we feel comprehensively capture the complete experience of our employees when they come to work. We want to create holistic workplaces where people do not just show up but thrive,” Malik said.

Malik, however, noted that whereas the survey showed that employees who are older and have had tenure of more than 10 years in their organizations are happy at their workplaces, the younger employees showed dissatisfaction with their rewards and recognition and employee well-being propositions.

“We have the second youngest population in the world; so, it will be shortsighted to ignore the input from our young Ugandan talent.” Uthman Mayanja, the country senior partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers, explained that the data that was collected from the different organisations was subjected to a rigorous review process to come up with useful data that will shape and inform improved employment practices in the country, especially in the current environment of remote working and digital connectivity.
