Few things are more annoying than a frozen smartphone. For example, when you are in the middle of browsing or about to receive a call, a smartphone malfunction cuts you off from your workflow.

A phone freeze is when a phone stops working while you are using it. This can take a few minutes or hours. However, there are several steps you can try to unfreeze your phone, depending on whether it is an Android or iPhone. These can range from simple reboots (restart) to completely wiping and restoring the system to its factory settings.

Sometimes, a frozen phone can be liberated by resetting the phone, but other times a freeze is one of the first symptoms of a bigger hardware or software problem. The goal when dealing with a malfunctioning phone is to fix the immediate problem, not just the symptom.

SOLVING THE PROBLEM

Restart

The first step should be basically giving in a few seconds and restart the phone because you could have given it many instructions. For instance, you opened many web browsers while you are constantly texting. This can cause overheating that can lead to a temporary freeze.

When it all fails, turn off the smartphone, wait a few seconds and then turn it on again. This works best if you are dealing with an unresponsive app or clogged memory. On an Android phone, hold down the power button until you see the option to power down the phone. On the iPhone, hold down the power button until you see a red slider for turning it off.

Remove the battery
If your smartphone is so frozen that you can’t even turn it off, the next step is to remove the battery.

Diagnose it

If the freezes are continuous, you may have a more technical problem. If you are not running the most recent version of the operating system, updating your system often fixes problems and vulnerabilities.

If you recently installed an app, incompatibility may be the problem; so, removing the app could fix the issue. If the app is one you need for work, take the phone to a phone repairer. It is advisable to take it to where you bought it.

If your phone’s memory is getting full, remove any files or apps you don’t need and create space. Remember that as your phone gets older, problems may be harder to identify. When the hardware begins to wear out, the phone will need to be replaced.

When you use heavy weight apps in lower-end smart phones, due to slow CPU and small RAM, the hardware gets overloaded. So, those phones often become slow overtime. When you install latest versions of apps, they usually take up more space, thereby straining hardware even more.

Erase the phone

If all else fails, you can try to restore your phone to its factory settings and start afresh. In doing this, you are likely to lose a lot of vital information, but that is the best way to treat the freezes.
