Denis Lavagne

Vipers SC begin life after Denis Lavagne with a potentially tricky Uganda Premier League assignment against Mbarara City FC today, Wednesday, as the Venoms attempt to steady their campaign following the Frenchman’s departure.

Lavagne’s exit after less than a season in charge has thrown the spotlight on Vipers’ immediate response, with assistant coach John Ayala Luyinda and the remaining technical staff tasked with guiding the team through the transition.

The former head coach left by mutual consent on Saturday, October 24, following a goalless draw against Police FC.

His departure comes at a time when the Venoms (as Vipers are fondly nicknamed by their adoring fans) are still trying to establish consistency in their title campaign, making today’s trip to Rwamwanja an early test of the team’s resilience and the technical staff’s ability to maintain direction.

Vipers sit sixth on the league table with 11 points from six matches, having won three, drawn two and lost once. Those figures leave them with little room for complacency as they seek to close the gap on the early pace-setters.

More importantly, the match offers the Venoms an opportunity to demonstrate that Lavagne’s departure will not derail their ambitions. With the club yet to settle into life without the Frenchman, the immediate challenge will be to preserve their competitive edge, restore momentum and avoid dropping valuable points.

However, Mbarara City could provide an uncomfortable welcome. The hosts occupy 14th place and will be keen to exploit any uncertainty within the Vipers camp.

Their own technical situation has also attracted attention, with Zaidi Bwekwaso handling interim duties while questions remain over the whereabouts of registered head coach Francis Mugerwa. Mbarara City had not issued a statement clarifying the situation in the information available ahead of the fixture.

That makes the encounter a contest between two sides navigating different forms of uncertainty. While Vipers must show they can move forward without Lavagne, Mbarara will be looking to turn home advantage into a much-needed result.

Elsewhere, KCCA FC host Lugazi FC at Lugogo, hoping to refocus on league business after an unusual interruption to their previous fixture. The Kasasiro Boys’ Matchday Seven encounter against UPDF FC on October 22 was abandoned after a floodlight failure at Lugogo.

The match was halted within the opening 10 minutes, leaving its eventual outcome dependent on formal guidance and a ruling from the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA).

KCCA subsequently apologised to fans and stakeholders over the incident while awaiting clarification on the status of the unfinished match, including whether it would be replayed.

Against Lugazi, the immediate task is to put that disruption behind them and concentrate on the points available on the pitch. The visitors, meanwhile, will be eager to make the most of the occasion against a side whose preparations have been complicated by the unresolved UPDF fixture
