Residents of Kitgum and Pader districts have held a peaceful demonstration to protest delayed compensation by Uganda National Roads Authority (Unra).

More than 50 people from Pader and Kitgum took to the streets on Monday to express their dissatisfaction with Unra.

Last month, residents affected by the Gulu-Acholibur-Musingo road works convened a meeting at Acholibur in Pader district in the presence of Unra engineers and district officials.

They gave the authority a two week’s ultimatum to respond to their grievances. However, Unra didn’t respond to the concerns, prompting residents to storm the streets.

Alfred Okwera from Labongo-Layamo sub-county blames Katuramu and Company for continuing to issue the affected persons with payment vouchers for undervalued property despite their repeated complaints.

John Ocan, 78, says he has failed to maintain his home after the only commercial house from which he earned Shs 1.7m each month was demolished to pave way for the road works.

Charles Nyeko, the chairperson of the affected persons, said this was the last time they would be demonstrating peacefully. He cautions Unra to comply with their concerns and demands or else prepare for court action.
