Motorists using the Kampala-Entebbe Expressway can now pay toll fees using mobile money, in a move aimed at reducing reliance on cash and making toll payments more convenient.
The ministry of Works and Transport and MTN Uganda launched the mobile money payment service at the Kajjansi toll plaza, saying it will allow motorists to pay toll fees directly from their mobile phones at designated toll lanes.
The service adds to the existing payment options on the expressway, which include cash and the cashless NFC card. Lanes 4 and 5 at all three toll plazas in Busega, Kajjansi and Mpala have been designated for mobile money toll transactions.
The new payment solution is part of the ministry’s broader strategy to transition toll collection to a fully cashless system through Automated Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) across Uganda’s transport network.
Addressing the media, Dr Timothy Tibesigwa, acting engineer-in-chief at the ministry of Works, said the move was intended to improve efficiency and convenience for road users while embracing technology in Uganda’s transport infrastructure.
Jemima Kariuki, MTN MoMo Uganda’s chief products officer, said the introduction of mobile money toll payments demonstrates how digital financial services can simplify everyday transactions beyond traditional mobile money services.
“Mobile money has become an essential part of how Ugandans pay, transfer and manage their money, and we are now extending that convenience into the transport experience,” Kariuki said.
