When Joshua Kwagala first ventured into music production in 2014, he was still a student with little foresight of the trajectory his life would take.
Today, the Kasese-born creative, professionally known as Iam Jkayz, has carved out a reputable space for himself both as a producer and a recording artist, having worked with several established Ugandan musicians while simultaneously advancing his own solo career.
His defining moment arrived in 2018 with the production of “Butabika” for T Paul 256. The track served as a pivotal turning point, providing the momentum he needed to pursue music with greater seriousness.
“That song made me continue with the career,” Jkayz recounts.
The journey has since broadened considerably. In 2023, he achieved his own breakthrough as a vocalist with the release of “Kuku” followed by “Oije Ondarire”, a collaboration that featured Truth 256, DJ Mats and Rapa Camio.
Managing the dual roles of producer and singer has presented its own set of difficulties. Jkayz acknowledges that balancing both talents has been one of the more significant challenges he has navigated throughout his evolution in the industry.
Another substantial obstacle was the absence of a personal studio. After years of dedicated work and disciplined saving, he eventually established his own recording company, Studio 49 Africa.
For Jkayz, owning a studio represents a critical achievement, as it affords him the creative freedom to refine his craft while laying the groundwork for more ambitious projects.
A sound of his own
Jkayz characterises his musical style as an Afro-pop fusion, distinguished by the incorporation of Runyakitara-based drums. He believes this combination lends his production a distinctive quality, and his capacity to operate across multiple genres has emerged as one of his core strengths.
His production credits span a diverse roster of artists, including Truth 256, Sir Kisoro, T Paul, Jose Chameleone, Allan Toniks and John Blaq. When asked to identify a favourite among his works, he refrains from singling out any particular track.
“All songs mean a lot to me, mostly to all artists who have worked with me. It has been my pleasure,” he states.
Beyond the recording booth, Iam Jkayz is an avid reader, a football enthusiast and a devoted music lover. Born on March 10, 1999, and raised in Kasese, he attended Parental Care School, King Jesus Junior, Kasese Secondary School, St John’s Mukono and Welden High School.
His musical aptitude extends well beyond beat-making. Jkayz is proficient in up to four musical instruments and claims he can construct a compelling beat in under three minutes.
This versatility has been instrumental in his growth as both a producer and an artist.
With Studio 49 Africa now operational, Jkayz has set his sights on ambitions that extend beyond producing hit records.
He aspires to build a record label capable of becoming one of the largest in Africa and intends to leverage his experience to guide young musicians as they navigate the early stages of their careers.
“I want to see myself be a better version of myself and, if God wishes, support young talent with my own God-given abilities,” he says.
For a young man who began producing music while still in school, Jkayz has already travelled a remarkable distance.
His current focus, however, remains firmly fixed on the future: refining his sound, nurturing emerging talent and transforming Studio 49 Africa into an enterprise of far greater magnitude.
