A screen grab of the presented video evidence

The treason trial of four-time presidential candidate Dr Kizza Besigye and his co-accused continued Tuesday, with state witness and spy Andrew Wilson presenting additional video and audio evidence.

Besigye continues to be tried in absentia due to his reported ill health, while his co-accused, Hajji Obeid Lutale and UPDF Captain Denis Oola, appeared before High court trial judge Emmanuel Baguma.

Wilson continued his testimony on Tuesday, playing lengthy recordings of meetings that Besigye and Joel Wakayima allegedly held in Geneva, Switzerland.

Unlike Monday’s presentation, where the audio and video clips were unclear and the individuals could not be easily identified, Tuesday’s video provided clearer images, including that of a white individual whom Wilson claimed was him with Joel Wakayima and Besigye.

However, the audio from the clip was once again bubbly, distorted, echoing, and noisy. Although the laughter of Besigye, who appeared farthest from the recording device, could occasionally be picked up, the voice of the male figure next to the device could not be discerned.

Due to the poor audio quality of the video, Wilson had to make a great effort to explain to trial judge Baguma what was being discussed in the meeting. He insisted the dialogue detailed a plot to overthrow the government of President Yoweri Museveni.

Even changing the courtroom and the playback equipment failed to improve the audio output. Questions were also raised regarding the video’s timestamp. Although Wilson told the court that he made the recording in Geneva, Switzerland, on January 28, 2024, the played video bore a timestamp of May 24, 2020.

Furthemore, Wilson claimed that Kenyan security lost the secret recordings of his meeting with Besigye and Lutale in Nairobi. This meeting allegedly took place before their abduction from the hotel where they had gone to attend Martha Karua’s book launch.

Meanwhile, Lutale’s daughter, Mariam Lutale, has joined a four-member legal team to defend her father in the High court. Earlier in November last year, before Lutale and Besigye were committed to the High court to stand trial, Mariam attracted public attention when she became overwhelmed with emotion over what she termed the prolonged detention of her father without trial, calling the court a theatre running on a script.

She will now represent her father alongside Obeid’s younger brother Farouk Kizito Kamulegeya, Wilson Kato, and Sylas Ogul, all from Baraka Legal Associated Advocates. Trial judge Emmanuel Baguma said the court had received a letter dated August 24 in which Lutale formally instructed the four lawyers to represent him. Besigye and Lutale had initially.

  1. Intil something else emerges , I am still going to think that this is a case of ” Solicitation” by this particular witness.
One Joel Wakayima has been named as the man who first contacted witness Orlando Andy Wilson . Its said that Wakayima is the person with a head scarf in the video . Wakayima also happens to be the president of an organization named Victims Of Despotic Systems . Oddly , what he is alleged to have said in these secret recordings in un audible .
I find it strange that someone whose intention is to assassinate a president then topple a government by force of arms would turn to Orlando & Risks Inc , and investigator on matters to do with security , anti-terrorism , organized crime etc.
We wait to hear from Wakayima why he was in those meetings and who contacted whom .

  2. Betty, during the 2006, Rape and Treason Trial of Dr. Besigye, don’t Ugandans of age remember one state witness sic Aryem, a supposedly LRA Witness who appeared in court with akin Al Wakayima head scarf (outrageous headgear/wrap)?

  3. Indeed the saying of a few people that NRM should govern this country until it gets tired is true. Its own diehard supporters are dead, under arrest, and their children are the ones trying to survive this dodgy political party with all their knowledge and CIA guerrilla warfare of the USA military normal. There are no Uganda political party that can topple NRM other than itself. To have a witness in an international or national high court case of a man like spy Andrew Wilson, who demanded government military protection, shows how far NRM has gone! The name Orlando clearly signify an American place in a Florida state that is frequently cited in the USA for elevated violent crime and property theft rates!

  4. The trial of Dr. Kiiza Besigye and co-accused should be dismissed due to serious concerns about the credibility and reliability of the evidence presented. The proceedings risk undermining public confidence in Uganda’s justice system.Questions have been raised regarding apparent inconsistencies in the prosecution’s evidence. For example, some video materials appear to be dated 2020, while a state witness reportedly claimed that the recordings were made in 2024. Such discrepancies warrant careful scrutiny.Concerns have also been expressed about the quality of the audio recordings, with critics arguing that the recordings are unclear and may not meet the standard of reliable evidence expected in court.Additionally, some observers have questioned whether the proceedings create an appearance of bias. Given the significance of the case, it is essential that the matter be handled in a manner that is transparent, impartial, and consistent with the principles of due process and fair trial rights. Judge Baguma is so biased and corrupt.
