At a time when Uganda’s private sector is increasingly being called upon to create jobs, promote innovation and contribute to social development, Bukenya Sulaiman has built a career around the belief that business can serve a purpose beyond profit.
His interests span entrepreneurship, media, cultural promotion and philanthropy, with much of his work focused on creating opportunities for young people and promoting Uganda’s identity.
From a difficult childhood in Busega-Nateete, Kampala, where he was orphaned at a young age, Bukenya has risen to become the founder and chairman of Uganda Online Investments Ltd, a diversified business group with interests in electronics, hospitality, agro-processing, real estate and media.
He also heads Uganda Online Media, a platform he uses to promote development stories, local enterprise, culture and Ugandan success.
Born on February 15, 1986, at Rubaga Hospital in Kampala, Bukenya’s early experiences shaped his outlook on life and strengthened his determination to build a future for himself while contributing to the welfare of others.
His story is one of resilience, ambition and an enduring attachment to culture. Over the years, he has sought to combine entrepreneurship with cultural preservation and community service, arguing that Uganda’s heritage and traditions can be powerful drivers of tourism, enterprise and social development.
Bukenya’s early life was marked by difficulties following the loss of his parents. Growing up in Busega-Nateete, he had to navigate circumstances that could easily have limited his ambitions.
Instead, the experience strengthened his determination to create opportunities not only for himself but also for others facing similar challenges.
He pursued higher education at Makerere University and later undertook short courses in media, ethics and governance at the University of Amsterdam and psychology at Yale University.
He also pursued financial certifications, which have contributed to his understanding of business and investment.
