The Devil Wears Prada (2006) was a surprise hit, making $326 million on a $35 million budget.

Based on a 2003 novel of the same name (written by Lauren Weisberger), it followed Anne Hathaway’s Andy, an aspiring journalist, who stumbles into the fashion arena.

She is forced to tolerate the industry’s shallow sensibilities and her boss’s tyrannical behaviour. In the original film, Andy left Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep) to forge a new path for herself after realizing that she was unwilling to adopt the cutthroat tactics required to succeed in the fashion industry.

In the sequel, the pair are reunited after Andy’s entire newsroom is abruptly fired and Miranda’s boss forces her to hire Andy. Miranda and Andy must evolve in a landscape that rejects print media.

The film has been well-received thus far (79 per cent critic rating and 88 per cent audience score). Critics have compared the sequel to a visit with old friends. While the movie fails to recapture the humour, whimsy, and magic of its predecessor, it still tells a competent story with fresh twists and turns.
