Anne Aliker

Anne Aliker is the new head of Africa for Corporate and Investment Banking (CIB) at Standard Bank Group, Africa’s largest bank by assets.

Her elevation reflects both the rising stature of Ugandan professionals and a strategic pivot in African finance. The appointment, announced on November 1, 2025, places a seasoned Ugandan banker at the helm of one of the continent’s most critical financial divisions, responsible for unlocking investment opportunities and driving cross-border growth.

For Uganda, Aliker’s elevation is a national pride and a validation of its human capital. She now joins a distinguished cohort of Ugandans in top positions within the group, including Anne Juuko, Francis Karuhanga, Doreen Rwakatungu- Musiime and Patrick Mweheire.

This collective success story paints a compelling picture of Uganda as a key pipeline for executive talent in Africa.

“We are immensely proud of Anne’s achievement and the growing visibility of Ugandan talent within Standard Bank Group,” says Mumba Kalifungwa, Chief Executive of Stanbic Bank Uganda.

“Her appointment is not only a personal milestone but also a validation of the strength of Uganda’s financial professionals on the continental stage.” Paul Muganwa, the executive director and Head of CIB at Stanbic Bank Uganda, echoed the sentiment, calling it “a powerful testament to the quality of leadership emerging from Uganda.”

BLUEPRINT FOR PAN-AFRICAN LEADERSHIP

Beyond national borders, Aliker’s appointment is a clear signal of Standard Bank Group’s strategic direction. It reinforces the bank’s commitment to its “pan-African people strategy,” which prioritizes leadership diversity and deep local expertise as the engine for achieving its purpose: “Driving Africa’s Growth.” Luvuyo Masinda, the chief executive of CIB at Standard Bank Group, who announced the appointment, highlighted Aliker’s “wealth of experience and a proven record of strategic leadership across the continent.”

He noted that her leadership would be “key in shaping the future of our Africa business into its next chapter.”

Aliker’s career trajectory within the Group—from leading CIB Uganda, to heading Investment Banking for Africa Regions and International, and most recently serving as Head of Client Coverage—serves as a textbook case of successful internal talent development.

It demonstrates that deep, on-the-ground experience is now a critical qualification for leading pan-African operations. In her own comments, Aliker frames her new role as both an honour and a personal calling.

“It is an incredible honour to take on this role at such a transformative time for our continent,” she says. “Our purpose — to drive Africa’s growth — is deeply personal to me. It’s about enabling African businesses to thrive, empowering our people, and connecting opportunities across borders.”

This vision of “connecting opportunities across borders” lies at the heart of the modern African banking narrative. It signals a shift away from a siloed, country-by-country approach towards an integrated model that facilitates the flow of capital and business across the continent.

The appointment also burnishes Standard Bank Group’s recent recognition by Forbes as one of the World’s Best Employers, showcasing its commitment to creating an environment where African talent can not only thrive but also ascend to its most powerful positions.

Ultimately, Aliker’s story is more than a corporate promotion; it is a multifaceted signal. For Uganda, it is a celebration of homegrown talent reaching the pinnacle of African finance. For the industry, it is a robust endorsement of a leadership model that believes Africa’s growth is best driven by its own people.
