Uganda Airlines, the national carrier, finds itself in a precarious situation that demands urgent attention from the government.

Since its relaunch in 2019, the airline has expanded its fleet and routes impressively, yet the stark reality is that it has operated at a loss every year. The recent Auditor General’s report reveals a staggering Shs 140 billion loss due to ticket fraud and an additional Shs 170 billion from ticket manipulations.

These figures are not just numbers; they represent a serious mismanagement that must be addressed. The airline’s management, led by CEO Jennifer Bamutuaraki, has acknowledged the significant costs associated with fuel, crew allowances, and maintenance— accounting for 20% of the airline’s revenue.

However, these operational challenges should not overshadow the critical issue of accountability for the fraud that has plagued the airline. Who will be held responsible for these staggering losses?

The government, as the owner of Uganda Airlines, must step in and demand transparency and accountability. Furthermore, the future of the Bombardier jets looks bleak, especially with the recent sale of the manufacturer to Mitsubishi.

This raises questions about whether due diligence was adequately conducted before engaging with Bombardier. The government must ensure that proper assessments are made in future procurement decisions to avoid such pitfalls. Uganda Airlines is not just a business; it is a symbol of national pride and connectivity.

It is essential for the airline to thrive, not only for economic reasons but also to enhance Uganda’s global presence. Therefore, the government must consider a comprehensive strategy that includes a management overhaul, stricter financial controls, and enhanced oversight.

Investing in training for staff, implementing robust anti-fraud measures, and pursuing strategic partnerships could also be vital steps toward recovery. It is crucial for the government to rally support, not just for the airline but for the economic stability it represents.

The turbulence faced by Uganda Airlines is a call to action for the government. The time to act is now. With the right changes and support, Uganda Airlines can soar again, serving as a vital link for both trade and tourism.

The future of this national carrier depends on decisive leadership and a commitment to accountability. Let us not allow this opportunity to slip away.

  1. I think the whole management of the airlines should be overhauled becoz this is total robbery and what is the IGG doing about this.
    This is a national matter

  2. Captain Babu saw this coming. In his words, “we need experts, not politicians.” As a country, we do not seem to learn, even from very expensive mistakes. More politics will be used to finally collapse the National Carrier.
