A man who attempted to seize a house and two acres of land from his 80-year-old grandmother has been sentenced to six months of community service by the Bubulo Magistrate’s court.

Anthony Wabweni, a resident of Tsekululu sub-county, was found guilty of criminal trespass and domestic violence. Robert Wambwa, a community liaison officer at Namisindwa Central police station, confirmed that Wabweni is currently serving his sentence by cleaning at Busulwa Government Primary School under the supervision of the local council chairperson.

In addition to his community service, chief magistrate Esther Nalulungi ordered Wabweni to pay a fine of Shs 300,000 and return the property to his grandmother, Jessica Nabulo.

The case, which began last year, was handled by Redeemed International, a non-governmental organization that provides free legal services to widows and orphans. The organization’s lawyer, Desi Nekesa, praised the court for the swift hearing and ruling.

According to Vediket Manana, public relations officer for Redeemed International, Namisindwa district has a high number of property-grabbing cases targeting widows and orphans.

The ruling was welcomed by the Namisindwa district LC V chairperson, Emma Bwayo, who expressed hope that the sentence would serve as a deterrent to others who attempt to grab properties from vulnerable members of the community.
