We discussed the most anticipated movies of 2025 a few weeks ago. But if I am being honest; I prefer TV shows to movies. A movie is a light snack.
A TV show creates the sort of immersion I crave. We live in the Golden Age of Television. So, what can we expect from the TV landscape in 2025?
Andor Season 2 is just around the corner. Season One blew our expectations out of the water. Critics call this show ‘Star Wars for Adults’. It gives viewers a glimpse at the seedy underbelly of the Star Wars universe. It shows us the lines the rebellion was forced to cross to prevent the tyrannical Empire from crushing the common man under its boot.
If you dropped Stranger Things after the first season, this is as good a time as any to binge the series. Each episode of the latest seasons feels like a standalone movie in terms of scope and the ambition of the storytelling. The show, set in the 1980s, pits a band of teens from a small town against ancient evils from a separate dimension. Expect a masterful blend of horror, drama, and Sci-Fi/fantasy when the fifth and final season debuts.
Severence is the trippiest show of the last ten years. The protagonists work for a company that wipes their memories whenever they enter or leave the premises. In other words, while at work, the protagonists know nothing about their lives outside the company. And once they leave the premises, they don’t know what they did at work or who they even met.
Season one kept us glued to our screens. It also ended on a nail-biting cliffhanger. Hopefully, season 2 sticks the landing.
Daredevil: Born Again initially repelled viewers. Netflix gave us three brutal but highly entertaining seasons. Then Disney came along and attempted to reboot the franchise. Fans expected the company to blunt the show’s edge. After all, Disney primarily makes family-friendly content.
But after filming several episodes for the reboot, Disney went back to the drawing board and decided to continue the Netflix show viewers knew and loved. Again, fans were skeptical. But now we have a trailer and it looks like Daredevil: Born Again is even darker and more violent than the original show. Naturally, viewers are ecstatic.
The Last of Us Season One is currently hailed as the best video game adaptation ever. It succeeded despite making numerous changes to the source material because the developers of the video game played an integral role in the TV adaptation.
However, season one’s success has nothing to do with the anticipation surrounding the upcoming season. The Last of Us 2 caused a stir when it came out. For all its accolades, a portion of the audience hated the video game because of the storytelling decisions the developers made. Can season two tackle that controversial content without attracting the same uproar?
Reacher is a bizarre show. It does the same thing every season but no one complains because the formula works. With season 3, Reacher, who is probably the largest human you have ever seen in a TV show, will finally face an opponent bigger and more dangerous than he is.
I am hoping to watch season 3 of The Bear before the tense and oddly claustrophobic show returns for its fourth season. If you are one of those strange humans who think Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is the best Star Trek since Next Generation (it is not), the show’s third season airs this year.
I have not even mentioned Yellowjackets Season 3, Suits LA, 1923 Season 2, or The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6. You know what? 2025 might actually be television’s best year, yet.
