Two children standing by the roadside were yesterday Thursday knocked dead by a Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) vehicle in Bukedea town, eastern Uganda.

According to residents, the unnamed driver of the killer Land Cruiser vehicle is renowned for always driving under the influence of alcohol. The vehicle was coming from the Mbale direction heading to Bukedea town.

Peter Okurut witnessed the accident says that he and others were at Kwarikwar primary school watching a football match when the children, aged 4 and 6 were recklessly killed. They had gone to escort their aunt who was traveling to Atutur in Kumi district.

The children were standing by the roadside, waiting for a taxi, when the speeding car veered off the road and struck them, killing them instantly. Okurut blames the driver’s excessive speed for the accident.

After the accident, the driver fled the scene and all attempts to chase and hold him accountable were unsuccessful.

Damalie Nachuha, regional police commander for East Kyoga, confirmed that the vehicle belongs to the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). She said the police are actively working to locate the suspect and the vehicle. The deceased’s bodies have been taken to Mbale mortuary, pending postmortem examination.

  1. So the two deceased children 4 and 6 were standing along the road waiting for a taxi. Does it concern anyone that besides the alleged recklessness of the driver, these two are minors to be unaccompanied at the time.
