Menaria, who had worked as a chef in Switzerland since 2007, reportedly went missing following a dispute with his employer. He was allegedly flown to Uganda and held incommunicado at a factory, PRO Industries in Luwero before being smuggled across the border to Tanzania.
According to Joseph Obwona, the acting director of Interpol Uganda, Menaria’s son, Mukesh Kumar Menaria, reported the disappearance after losing contact with his father, prompting Swiss authorities to reach out to Interpol. Upon investigation, Ugandan police raided the suspected factory in Luwero, owned by Pankaj Oswal, but Menaria was not found.
“We visited the suspected place in Luweero in the company of the son of Mukesh Kumar Mineria but could not search because it was late at night. Our team returned there in the morning of October, 1 but failed to find the victim, we got information they had already smuggled him out of the factory and drove him to Tanzania via the Mutukula porous border point,” Obwona said.
In Tanzania, Menaria was reportedly detained at Kyaka police station on false theft charges. He was later released and returned to Uganda, where he reunited with his family over the weekend. Ugandan authorities are now working with the ministry of Foreign Affairs and diplomatic missions to arrange for Menaria’s repatriation to his chosen destination, India.
Uganda police have confirmed the arrests of three individuals; Ritah Ngabire, Kumar Rohit, and Vasundra Oswal who were charged with kidnap with intent to murder. They were arraigned before the Luwero Chief Magistrate’s court and later released on bail.
