The construction of the new facility is estimated to cost Shs 94 billion and will serve as the main office for the ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs.
The groundbreaking ceremony was presided over by the chief of defence forces (CDF) Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who emphasized the strategic importance of modern headquarters in enhancing operational efficiency and coordination within the UPDF.
Muhoozi highlighted that the new headquarters would incorporate advanced technology and infrastructure to support a modern defense strategy, reflecting the nation’s strength and resilience. He also praised the government, particularly President Yoweri Museveni, for making the project a reality.
“I want to thank UPDF for undertaking the construction of a decent and honourable Joint headquarters of the ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs/UPDF, which will be worthy of the name of the UPDF, and I am hopeful that the construction will be executed in two years as opposed to the estimated three years,” Muhoozi said.
Maj Gen Jack Bakasumba, chief of joint staff, noted that the project, to be executed by UPDF engineers, marks a significant step in the professionalization of the army. Edith Butuuro, the ministry’s under-secretary of finance and administration, revealed that the project has already been allocated Shs 20 billion and is expected to be completed in two to three years.
