Quick Talk had a chat with them about their decision to sing as a duo and how they are going to stick together in an industry where groups don’t last long.
Who are the people behind Kataleya and Kandle?
Kataleya and Kandle is a sensational female singing duo combined of Namakula Hadiijah (Kataleya) and Nabatuusa Rebecca Robins (Kandle).
How did the two of you meet and how long have you known each other?
Kandle: I had accompanied a friend to a birthday party and reaching there, Kataleya was the birthday girl. I said hi to her, we exchanged numbers, we connected and became friends. With time, we got close and that is how we found out that we could both sing.
How and when did you start music?
Kandle: Around 2017 to 2018, we realized that there was no female singing duo and we decided to start singing together.
Did you always want to be singers?
Kandle: In the first place no, because Kataleya wanted to be a pilot and I wanted to be an air hostess, but because of the love and passion we had for music, we are here today and ready to take over the world.
Who came up with the idea of singing together?
Kataleya: It was Kandle’s idea after realizing that there was no female singing duo in our times. So, she thought we could cover up that gap.
How would you describe your kind of music?
Kataleya: We are not described by any music genre, we are versatile. We can do dancehall, afrobeat, soul and much more.
How were you able to get your management?
Kataleya: While doing a recording session at Nessim’s Studio, he informed us about the music auditions that Theron Music (a record label) had organized. We reached out to them, auditioned and a few months later, we received a call from them informing us that they wanted to sign us and here we are now working with them as our managers.
How has the music journey been for you so far?
Kataleya: In the beginning, it was not easy at all. We lacked finances to support our projects. We lacked a team to work with, but for now, we are happy we have Theron Music as our management.
Any challenges?
Kataleya: Being a public figure comes with so many challenges; back in the day we could dress up any way we wished, hang out at any kafunda, eat from any restaurant, but now we can’t because we have people who look up to us and believe in our brand.
What things do you have in common besides love for music?
Kataleya: We both love fashion [they are quite fine dressers, this duo] movies, and traveling. We like to take care of ourselves; we both love to look good, the list is literally endless.
And any differences between you two?
Kataleya: This is a hard one, but one of us is a foodie and the other is not. One loves waking up early and the other almost cries every morning. But we shall not reveal who exactly does what.
We have seen duos/ groups come and later break up; how sure can we be that you two are here to stay?
Kataleya: First of all, we would like to thank our management Theron Music for always having our back. Despite what people say about groups, they still have faith in us and we promise not to disappoint. We have also been doing research about challenges different singing groups have faced worldwide so that we can learn from their mistakes and experiences.
What influences your great taste in fashion?
Kataleya: Like we said earlier, we love looking after ourselves and looking good; so, during our free time, we use it to research about the latest fashion trends that can work for us.
Which personalities in the industry do you look up to?
Kataleya: The industry has a lot of talented people and we pick a leaf from each of them because they all have something good about them.
If you weren’t singers, what would each of you be doing?
Kandle: Kataleya would be a pilot, and Kandle an air hostess. [Looks like, either way, these destinies were meant to meet at some point!]
Is there anything else each of you does besides music?
Kandle: At the moment our main focus is so much more at producing music as much as we can.
What do you do in your free time?
Kataleya: We spend some time with our families; listen to music, watch series, work out and much more.
Are you dating?
Kandle: Yes, at the moment we are deeply in love with our music.
Hahaha, nice one. What should fans expect from you this year?
