Godfrey Sabiti, the police sergeant who yesterday killed his wife and injured his three children before taking his own life, had written a will four days earlier.
The incident took place in Nsambya police barracks. According to the wording of the will, Sabiti planned this tragic end. VIP protection unit.
The deceased wife has been identified as Caroline Akol while the three children injured in the shooting are Joan Giramia, Blessing Kayeny and Ruth Kacwiny.
They are being treated at Mulago hospital. Emilian Kayima, the police spokesperson for Kampala metropolitan area, confirmed the shooting and said investigations have started.
“It is true our officer shot his wife, children and later himself but we are yet to establish the cause,” he said.
A friend close to Sabiti, who preferred anonymity, said Sabiti took his family for an HIV/Aids test last month and results showed he was positive while the rest of his family members were negative.
“After his wife realized that the husband was positive, the conflict started and the pair has been quarreling day and night,” he said.
The policeman source added that Sabiti wrote his will before killing himself and he never mentioned his wife anywhere. The Observer got a copy of the said will dated January 29, in which Sabiti stated: “I don’t have much to give to my children but my plot of land.”
Sabiti further stated that the plot should be sold and the money distributed equally among his children. He further said his gratuity from public service should also be collected and shared among his children.
This is the second death by suicide in two months of a police officer over HIV/Aids-related circumstances. In December, Patrick Oloya, a field force unit (FFU) officer attached to Pader central police station, ended his life inside the police barracks.
