Bobi Wine was arrested on Monday and remanded to Luzira prison on charges of disobedience of statutory duty when he and his co-accused in July 2018, allegedly held a demonstration to protest against the over-the-top tax (OTT) – commonly known as social media tax. He is currently applying for bail via the newly introduced teleconferencing system where suspects don’t have to physically come to court to have their cases heard.
Mufumbiro states that People Power youth have mobilized themselves around Busoga sub-region and will continue to protest until government adheres to their demands of free space for all political actors in the country.
“We, the Basoga are tired of being controlled by the state. We said we shall stop the business of the bridge and we’re doing it because we’re protesting against what they are doing to Bobi Wine. Busoga is taking the lead in changing the trajectory of this country. Enough is enough.” said Mufumbiro.
Jinja resident district commissioner (RDC) Erick Sakwa warned the activists that they will be arrested. Sakwa further warned activists against staging protests along highways, stressing that, they may lead to accidents following the high traffic of consumer good vehicles.
“I have received numerous reports about the dubious actions of People Power group in Jinja town involving themselves in burning tyres in the middle of the road. And as you know, Jinja is the gateway to so many towns, it is on a highway taking trailers, fuel tanks. I’m sounding a serious warning to those who are involved in such acts that as security we are going to take them on.” Sakwa said.
