The country’s most prestigious golf tournament, the Uganda Open, tees off tomorrow (November 18) at the par-71 Entebbe Club with hundreds of ladies vying for the most coveted prize in amateur competition.

Holder Martha Babirye will lead a rich field of elite names in the three-day tournament that kick-start the Tusker Malt-sponsored Uganda Open.

Babirye will be competing in a field that includes rival Irene Nakalembe, a lady who has been exceedingly dominant at Entebbe Golf Club but has never won the Uganda Open. Also lurking in expectations will be golfers like Eva Magala and Peace Kabasweka.

Entebbe Golf Club will host a total of seven events over the next three weeks. All these are part of the bumper 80th Uganda Open edition.

They are the Ladies Open, which tees off tomorrow; the Seniors Open, the Amateur Open, the Par-3 competition, the Pro-Am, the Professionals Open and the President’s Shield.

The event’s title sponsors, Tusker Malt Lager, have injected over Shs 300m in this year’s Open with Shs 100m kitty to be shared by the professionals.

The championship will also double as one of the Safari Tour Legs as has been the case since 2019. Uganda Golf Union secretary Anthony Agaba, who is the tournament director, revealed that the Open expects in excess of 300 participants across the Ladies, Amateurs and Professionals.

Last year’s Amateur winner was Kenyan John Lejirma while Zimbabwe’s Robson Chinhoi took the Professionals title. The Open has attracted golfers from USA, UK, Japan, South Korea, Nigeria, Zambia, Kenya, Tanzania and Ethiopia.
