The curtains are set to rise on the group stage of the 2020 Pepsi University Football League (UFL) with reigning champions Uganda Christian University (UCU) in action today, February 12 when they host Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) at their Mukono campus.
UCU enjoyed their most successful football season last year, winning both the UFL trophy in November 2019 and football gold at the AUUS University Games less than a month later in December 2019.
However, UCU will have a much-changed squad from last season’s owing to the departures of over eight first team players who have either graduated or played the maximum of four seasons or attained the maximum age of 25 years.
Ezra Kaye Kizito, Jerome James Ssemambo, Eric Wadribo, Vincent Adriko, Joseph Kakembo and Derrick Mbowa are some of the players as well as Timothy Oyam and Mohammed Lubega who joined Premier League sides Police FC and URA FC respectively.
UCU coach Kintu Mwera is, however, not worried about the player exits, saying he has a new squad capable of facing the challenge. IUIU have a chance to avenge their loss to UCU in the football final of the AUUS University Games at Kisubi last December.
UCU won that game 2-1 but IUIU coach Haruna Kebba believes that his side will do better at Mukono. In the other games, Kumi University hosts Kampala University tomorrow, February 13, Busitema University entertain Uganda Martyrs University on Friday (February 14) while Kabale University welcome Kyambogo University on Saturday, February, 15.
