Seven lucky Ugandans, including The Observer’s Nicholas Bamulanzeki, will watch the El Clasico between Barcelona and Real Madrid on December 18.
Brenda Makanga, Sarah Namulindwa, Memory Nampijja, Wilmer Nantumbwe, Bridgette Nabisalu and Vanessa Karungi are the other Ugandans for the big game at Barcelona’s Camp Nou.
They won the all-expenses-paid trip to watch the game after winning the inaugural Castle Lager Ladies Africa Five-a-side tournament. They beat Tanzania 1-0 in the final. Nile Breweries Ltd has sponsored their four-day treat in Spain.
Apart from watching the game, they will tour FC Barcelona stadium, meet the players and staff. They will be hosted by former Catalans’ star and African player of the year, Samuel Etoo, who is Africa’s brand ambassador for the Castle Lager Five-aside tournament. It will be a dream come true for the Ugandans to interact face-to-face with Lionel Messi, one of the world’s most famous footballers.
Francis Nyende, the Nile Special brand manager, said they expect the team’s experience at such a top European club to inspire other Ugandan girls into playing football. While in Spain, Bamulanzeki will coordinate the media activities for the girls.
The El Clasico pits Barcelona against their fierce rivals Real Madrid in Spain’s topflight league. Currently, the two rivals are tied on 34 points apiece, but Barcelona leads the league table on goal difference after 15 games. Messi is the leading marksman with 12 goals.
