The stage is set for the highly-billed final between Kampala University (KU) and Kyambogo University in the 2018 Pepsi University Football League (UFL) due this weekend.
The final is scheduled for this Saturday, November 10 at Nelson Mandela stadium, Namboole. The game kicks off at 3pm as organisers anticipate the possibility of post-match penalties to determine this year’s champion.
To reach the final, former champions Kampala University mounted a stunning comeback to beat St. Lawrence University 6-5 on penalties after leveling the semifinal match 3-3 on aggregate.
KU, who have won the competition twice, lost the first leg 1-2 at home and went to St. Lawrence to secure a 2-1 victory, forcing the tie in penalty shoots, which they won.
They now face Kyambogo University, who have never won the competition. Kyambogo are in the final after their comfortable 3-0 aggregate victory over Bugema University in the semifinals. They beat Bugema 2-0 and 1-0 on their home turf and away respectively.
Kyambogo are also optimistic they will be lucky this time round, having lost the 2014 final to Makerere University Business School (Mubs), and clinch their maiden title. On the bench, they have a hugely-experienced coach in Deo Sserwadda, who has formerly played for and coached super league giants, SC Villa.
There are cash prizes at stake for the best-performing teams. The champions will get a top cash prize of Shs 4 million; runners-up will bag Shs 3 million and third runner-up Shs 2 million. Sixteen universities have participated in the tournament this year.
