7-year-old boy collapses to death during school athletics competition

A 7-year-old pupil of Kalalaka primary school in Butebo district in eastern Uganda collapsed and died during an inter-house athletics competition.

Joseph Bamwilile, the P.1 pupil allegedly joined the 110-meter race without the permission of the teachers.

After running for about 10 meters, he allegedly fell down & collapsed according to Samuel Semewo, the Bukedi North Region police spokesperson. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Butebo health centre IV where he was rushed for treatment.

"The teachers of P.3-P.6 had taken their pupils for athletics. Bamwilile Joseph, a P.1 pupil fell down after 10m when he fell down and collapsed. We immediately informed the headteacher who ordered them to carry the pupil to Butebo health centre IV for medication. Unfortunately, when they reached the hospital, the doctors informed the teachers that their pupil had passed on," said Semewo.

The school headteacher, Ahamed Wasenya Gisenyi said; “his demise would have been avoided if he had listened to his teachers who advised the lower primary pupils not to join the race."
