The principal medical officer of Nakaseke hospital has succumbed to Covid-19 at Mulago hospital.
Doctor Emmanuel Mukunya, formerly medical superintendent and principal medical officer at Nakaseke hospital died of Covid-19 today Monday. He has served Nakaseke hospital for over 25 years.
Mukunya died in the intensive care unit where he was referred to from Mengo hospital after testing positive for Covid-19. Doctor Muhereza Mukuzi the secretary general of Uganda Medical Association and Ntumwa Matovu, a senior administrator at Nakaseke hospital confirmed the death of Dr Mukunya.
“It's true he has died today at Mulago hospital,” Mukuzi a colleague of the deceased said.
Ntumwa said he was on the way to meet the family and make burial arrangements for the deceased.
“Mukunya has been a committed and dedicated staff at our hospital," Ntumwa said. "He has turned down many other opportunities from other hospitals so as to serve the people of Nakaseke. We shall greatly miss him."
Nayebare Kyamuzigita the Nakaseke resident district commissioner (RDC) said that Mukunya tested positive for Covid-19 and he has been under treatment for two weeks but died today. Kyamuzigita said that Mukunya is irreplaceable and will be missed at the hospital.
Kyamuzigita said that the district has acquired enough personal protective gear and asked health workers to take extra measures to guard themselves against the virus. Nakaseke hospital is struggling to attract specialists to work at the facility and the death of Mukunya is a big blow to the labour force.
According to the Uganda Medical Association, more than 100 health workers have died of Covid-19 across the country.
