Lightning kills 10 boys playing football in Arua

Lightning killed ten boys who were playing football in Gbulukua village, Ayivu West Division in Arua city. The boys aged between 12 and 15 years were struck dead in the evening of Thursday as some played football and others who took shelter in a newly built grass-thatched house.

Alex Ndema, the Gombolola internal security officer former Ayivuni sub-county now Ayivu West Division said that the lightning first struck the children who had taken refuge on the verandah of the grass-thatched house killing one child on the spot. Moments later, nine other children were struck and left unconscious.

The children were rushed to Arua regional referral hospital where they died shortly after, while three others who were in a fair condition are still receiving treatment at Ayivuni health centre II.

Dr Filbert Nyeko, the director Arua hospital said that efforts to save the lives of the nine children failed, describing the incident as unfortunate.

The over one-hour heavy downpour started before 5 pm and subsided after 7 pm on Thursday.

May God take the 10 kids to the next step.

We must be friendly with animals as they know/feel nature & can warn us before it's too late!

My uncle, (killed by Museveni), was once saved by his chicken that ran out at night making so much noice & he followed them. Immediately lightning struck the hut that burnt to ashes, leaving him in slip but with the chicks!

Animals always get very very agitated before danger strikes!

Many bush fires in USA/Europe are caused by lightning!

My deepest condolences to the families of perished young boys.We are crying our tears and lamenting such a huge and irreparable loss.

For the Government..please educate Ugandans to protect themselves against this natural calamity which taking a number of lives in Uganda.

We need to make people aware to run for cover's level metal object out of hands and stay away from big trees.

If they can stay in their house 'the better. As soon as they see big dark clouds gathering and lightning
shooting dangerous lighting's they should take shelter.

Good thing is if the Government can install lighting rods or supply villages with special rockets to disperse clouds. This will save live' property and crops.

Arua seems to be prone to lightning activity. District officials should make it mandatory for every structure in the district to have at least a basic or rudimentary lightning conductor.

Furthermore, people and especially children should be sensitized not to be out in the open during a storm and also not to take shelter under trees or buildings lacking lightning conductors.

It is interesting that there are buildings in this country built before independence that have lightning conductors but today in 2020 children are dying because local authorities are not paying attention to such a basic thing as a lightning conductor!
