The United Nations said Wednesday it is temporarily removing some civilian staff from Sudan because of the security situation in the country, where security forces Monday carried out a deadly raid on a protest camp.

Medics linked to the opposition said the death toll from Monday’s operation and subsequent unrest had risen to 108 and that it was expected to increase further. No official casualty figures have been released.

The raid followed weeks of wrangling between the ruling military council and opposition groups over who should lead Sudan’s transition to democracy and it marked the worst outbreak of violence since the army ousted President Omar al-Bashir in April after months of protests against his rule.

“What we are doing is temporarily relocating some of the staff from Sudan. There will still be some staff on hand to perform critical functions but because of security some ... are being relocated temporarily,” said UN spokesman Farhan Haq.

The spokesman provided no information on how many staff were being moved, where they were going, when they might return and how many would remain in the country. The staff being relocated were civilians and no uniformed personnel are leaving, he said.

U.N. activities in Sudan include development cooperation and humanitarian assistance as well as peacekeeping operations by the joint African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) deployed since 2007, according to the UN website.

This is typical of this United Nation all world counties institution.

As Britain and much of the Western Worlds celebrate their own end of wars African countries that are attached to the commonwealth of countries are bleeding with blood from tyrannical military rules that resemble Hitler's regime.

UN was a league of nations formed under the great threat of world war one or world war two. What it represents right now one does not know. One is of the opinion that all member countries contribute so that the citizens of these countries stay protected with their lives in this world club.

Even if an African citizen these days thought that the African Union would do a good job of protecting African lives from military tyrannical rule it has proved a mere bad dream.

They are only onlookers and very much unable to do anything.

Thanks!

UN is the cause of today world tension/wars, it bolsters dictators/useless rulers while asking peaceful lands to take in refuees! How can UN help people flee their countries to leave demons without opposition & chance for change, yet believes the body is humane?

How is being forced to live in exile, live in UN refuge camps, some thing to be proud of?

Thanks!

UN would not want to lose the billions it gets & for what prupose, while UNHCR prays dictators/bad rulers/wars go on & refugees they bunddled in filthy camps or forced on developed countries continue flocking in!

Pitty, even developed countries don't see UN is looting them of money they could use to creat jobs, housing...for the young!

Do refugees forced on Uganda by UN/EU live as if their cause is financed quarterly (EU 15 million euros & 3 times more by UN?

Dictators, useless rulers, wars...are blessings to UN!

kabayekka, thanks.

What's more anguishing is how developed countries continue to be UN members, when what the body does is contrary to their democratic principles: good governance to ensure; education for all children, help modernise/subsidize agriculture, social housing, healthcare, unemployment benefit for job seekers...!

UN has, continues to bolster dictatorship, bad rule, while UNHCR has made it point of honour to encourage refugees to flee to developed countries & countries not at armed war like Uganda!

The current unease migration/refugees cause USA/Europe doesn't concern UN, so why are they still members financing UN/UNHCR, even knowing migrats/refugees are looking for better living: peace, education healthcare, housing...& this won't stop as UN is not concerned about good governance in all member countries?
