RIP: Apolo Nsibambi
Uganda's longest serving prime minister Prof Apolo Nsibambi is dead.
A close family member confirmed the news of Nsibambi’s passing but said he was yet to get the details. Rev Festo Kalungi, the former Parish priest Namirembe Cathedral where Nsibambi attends prayers, also confirmed his death in the Namirembe Cathedral WhatsApp group, saying the late has been down with sickness for some time.
According to sources, Nsibambi, 78, has been battling leukemia. The source said the late has been flying to South Africa for treatment.
According to the assistant vicar of St Paul's Cathedral Namirembe, Rev. Canon Benon Banja said that Prof Nsibambi passed away on Tuesday evening at his home in Mengo, a Kampala suburb.
Known for his wit and being time conscious (a rare trait in Uganda's politicians) Nsibambi served as Uganda premier from April 1999 to May 2011. He replaced Kintu Musoke and was replaced by Amama Mbabazi.
