Cabinet has approved the creation of nine cities, five of which will become operational effective July 1, 2020.

These cities include Arua, Gulu, Jinja, Fort Portal, and Mbarara which will be elevated from municipal status. The others are Hoima and Mbale which will become operational in 2021.

The move is part of a government decision to  turn nine municipalities into regional cities. They include Fort Portal, Mbarara and Hoima from western Uganda; Entebbe from the central region; Lira, Arua and Gulu from the northern region, and Mbale and Jinja from the eastern Region.

According to the minister of Local Government, Tom Butime, the cabinet meeting that was chaired by President Museveni in Entebbe yesterday, resolved that the municipalities will be elevated in a phased manner.

A budget of Shs 130 billion was set aside for the operations of the cities after meeting all the requirements. In February, a technical team led by the commissioner of urban administration from the ministry of Local Government, Justinian Niwagaba on a mission in Fort Portal noted that all regional cities will have two divisions.

Niwagaba added that each division will have a member of parliament - MP and an overall MP for each city. Uganda's parliament is already bloated with 458 MPs who strain the public purse in form of high salaries and allowances.

Ekelot, thanks.

Why will Ugandans vote in mps again?

Without mps, Ugandans will go on with Museveni, but he won't be blinding the outside world as to the situation any more when parliament will be empty!

Then Museveni will just have tribal leaders to hook Ugandans to tribal belonging & will dictate as a real man with balls!

Tribal leaders are not standing down, UNITY of our people around Bobi Wine to give chance to throw Musevnei out is not coming, so there is no reason to vote in mps again! Museveni does not need to be elected as he is the only candidate, will win & Ugandans work in peace to ensure his pocket money!

Jesus Christ, where do these come from, eh? What is the basic basic definitions of 'cities'.

These so called trading centres do not have any sewerage systems, no latrines, no rubbish disposal systems and the hospitals do not have incinerators (Gulu was on the news last week).

I think they have lived with their cattle in the bush for so long so that when they see a corrugated house, they will say; "Ah, now we are in the city, let us drink!". It beggars belief that these guys have taken Ugandans for fools for so long.

Some areas are still struggling to to keep the status of a municipality, they should have remained town councils but now they are being elevated to city status
