Miss Culture Karamoja sentenced over phone theft

Miss Culture Karamoja has been sentenced to community service for stealing a mobile phone.

Gloria Napeyok who is also a gospel singer was convicted by Grade II magistrate, Paul Abunyala on Tuesday after she pleaded guilty to theft. She was jointly convicted with her boyfriend Hamis Lopeyok over the same offense.

The two were convicted to community service at Kotido health centre IV where they will be working for 3 hours for six weeks. Court heard that on April 30, the Miss Culture while at Last Drop Bar in Kotido town stole a mobile phone worth Shs 380,000.

The act by Napeyok has not gone well with the public. Elder David Modo a resident in Kotido town says Napeyok is no longer appropriate to represent the Karimojong culture.

Maria Kokoi, member of the Village Women’s Council in Entebbe, Kotido East Parish also agrees that the Napeyok is not worth representing the culture of Karamoja any longer. She says other leaders should be elected.

Rose Mary Igira, an executive in Karamoja Cultural Association regrets the incident calling it a shame. She said Napeyok should be not be allowed to represent Karamoja any more because if she is capable of repeating the crime and bring even more shame.

Miss Culture Karamoja is voted every year in a contest. She represents Karimojong at various cultural functions and lobbies for development of the Karimojong.

I think that this not limited to Karamoja alone. As a nation we have lost it all.

We're a society without culture. The poor girl didn't represent the real Karamojong culture but the Karamojong of the post 1986 era that is the reason why we see "culture representatives" stealing!

I will agree elder David Modo a resident in Kotido town who says that Napeyok is no longer appropriate to represent the Karimojong culture. NRM has ruined the country.

I lived in Moroto ( Nadiket village) between 1969 to 1972 so I know what a true Karamojong is like, the Napeyoks are the NRM bazukulu and they're thieves no surprise about that.

On the contrary, this Gloria Lopeyok is the very epitome of Karamoja culture; she should be "lauded" for upholding and living" the already forgotten culture of their ancestors: CATTLE RAIDING.

Just because there are no cattle to raid because they were raided by you know who doesn't mean you can diversify the commodity and become versatile.

After all who started all this shenanigans, eh? Don't make me laugh; You see A Karimojong has to survive as well, culture or no culture!

Cattle raids can't equate to stealing. Karamojong raid (rob) but don't steal (cowardly act)

Let her plead that she learnt from the national leaders.

If one leaves Kampala to grab and lease land with minerals and the young ones see, why not copy. God should call back all Ugandans and start on a new creation.
