MPs on the Education Committee today turned away the vice chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe for appearing without the Makerere University council chairperson.

The council is the supreme governing body of the university. It is responsible for the overall administration of the university and ensuring the due implementation of the objects and functions of the university.

Without prejudice, it's responsible for the direction of the university academically, financially, and administratively. The Education committee chaired by Jacob Opolot had written to the university council chairperson Lorna Magara, requesting her to appear before the committee over the on-going impasse at the university.

However today, Tuesday Nawangwe appeared without Magara and other top management members. Nawangwe told the MPs that Magara was convening an urgent meeting at the university to resolve the on-going strike, and could not appear before the committee.

However, committee chairperson Opolot said the university requested the MPs to postpone the meeting to today in the hope that the university council chairperson would attend.

Emmanuel Ongiertho, the MP Jonam County in Nebbi says the university is not taking the current impasse seriously. Namwange was tasked to ensure that members of the university council appear before the committee on Wednesday.

Last month, Nawangwe suspended Dr Deus Kamunyu Muhwezi, the chairperson Makerere University Academic Staff Association (Muasa) for alleged indiscipline and inciting staff.

The others suspended earlier were; Bennet Magara, the chairperson Makerere Administrative Staff Association (Masa) and his general secretary, Joseph Kalema. Their suspension has since caused an stand-off between the university management and teaching staff.

These MPs are not fit to address the issue at Makerere; this should be left entirely to a select group of external independent academicians recruited from Commonwealth Universities, like Oxford, Cambridge, Aberdeen, plus a Canadian and an Australian one.

You know Makerere has activated a 'cleansing process' to weed the university of pretenders and a system that has gone down the drain for decades. MAKE MAKERERE GREAT AGAIN!!

In an attempt to outshine his predecessors and please Mr. M7, Prof. Nawangwe is not only hurting his current victims of suspension and expulsion; but he is hurting himself, students and Makerere University community as a whole.

There are people who think that the position of leadership, gives them the reign to dominate and terrorize the people they lead.

The position of leadership is to constructively love and serve the people you lead.

In other words, without a sense of humility a leader can only destroy: not only his relationship with the people he/she leads, but also the organization/institution.

E.g., among the former VCs, who can overshadow Prof. Lubobi's simplicity and humility? And compared, who could tolerate Prof Baryamureba's arrogance (Kajanja) and flamboyance?

It appears Prof Nawangwe comes from the same school of thought with Mr. M7.

In order to emasculate the country Mr. M7 use the old-fashion communist leadership style "the dictatorship of the proletariat", thru deprivation, terror and/or fear.

In other words, punishment at work, punishes more the work and relationships than the person.
