Journalists Ssenyonyi, Mujuni charged with theft of handcuffs

The Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has sanctioned charges of assault and theft against NBS TV journalist Raymond Mujuni, NTV's Joel Ssenyonyi and Kyandondo East MP, Robert Kyagulanyi.

A reliable police source told URN that the three were added on the charge sheet on which three other suspects have already been charged and remanded to Luzira Prison.

The suspects who were charged at Buganda Road Magistrate court include David Lule, Julius Katongole and Nyanzi Ssentamu. The source says that police is still waiting for Mujuni and Ssenyonyi to record statements.

The three are alleged to have attacked and stolen handcuffs from the Central Police Station divisional police commander, Joseph Bakaleke last week during protests against the Shs 200 daily social media tax and mobile money tax.

Police based its case on video evidence captured during the protests. The video which URN has seen also shows unidentified person wearing a black jacket, carrying a brown bag and a camera in his hands, struggling to remove the handcuffs, and later running away with them.

Another suspect who is still in police custody over the same charges is Eddy Ssebufu alias Eddy Mutwe a bodyguard to Kyandondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi who was arrested last week on Friday.

On Wednesday, Kyagulanyi was interrogated for more than 8 hours and recorded a statement at Central Police Station (CPS) Kampala.

Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire could not be reached for official comment as he was not responding to repeated calls on his known phone number.
