Two people have been shot dead after they were reportedly found stealing logs from Modern Laminates, a factory in Njeru division, Buikwe district. The deceased are identified as Kiwanuka Kakeeto, 48, and Muzamiru Kambugu, 45.
Initial reports indicate that a security guard deployed by Accurate Security Services shot the two after he found them red-handed stealing logs. Eyewitnesses say that he first fired two bullets in the air to stop them from running and then shot them at close range.
The security guard has been arrested while the bodies were taken to Jinja hospital mortuary. However, Mubarak Batte, a counsellor who had talked to Muzamiru before he was shot, says its unlikely that the two were stealing from the factory.
"At least he should have shot them in the leg, we only found a piece of firewood. How can you shoot someone dead for just this piece of wood?" he asked.
Buikwe district deputy resident district commissioner Emmanuel Mitala confirmed the arrest of the security guard and called for a review of all security companies and the criteria they use for recruitment if personnel.
"We've always said that private security guards don't give enough training to their staff. After just two weeks they give them guns. Its not a matter of knowing how to hold and shoot a gun. It involves a lot more, how to relate with the people, how to detect and prevent crime" said Mitala.
Some area residents condemned the shooting saying the security guard rushed to shoot them yet they were not even trying to escape.
